In the wake of relentless rains and devastating floods, Kenya is facing a severe humanitarian crisis
Since mid-March, the floods have mercilessly swept through 21 counties, leaving a trail of destruction and despair in its wake.
But perhaps nowhere is the tragedy more felt than in Mai Mahiu, where a makeshift dam burst has claimed the lives of dozens and shattered countless families.
As the waters surged, five villages—Kamuchira, Jerusalem, Githioro, Georges, and Ruiru—were swallowed by the raging tide.
The death toll, already staggering, continues to climb, with at least 52 souls lost, including 28 innocent children.
And amidst the wreckage, 49 individuals remain missing, their fate uncertain, their loved ones clinging to hope against the odds.
The grief is palpable, the anguish overwhelming, as Mai Mahiu grapples with the aftermath of nature’s wrath.
Families torn asunder, homes reduced to rubble, dreams drowned in the unforgiving currents—the scars of this tragedy run deep, etched into the very fabric of the community.
But amid the darkness, a beacon of hope emerges.
St. John Ambulance, Red Cross, government and other multi-agency teams, has spearheaded emergency response efforts, racing against time to provide aid, comfort, and relief to those in need.
From the provision of first aid to the distribution of essential supplies—food, beddings and kitchen sets – their tireless efforts offer a glimmer of solace amidst the chaos.
Yet, the challenges loom large, the needs vast and urgent.
The displaced, numbering in 250 thousand, seek shelter, sustenance, and above all, solidarity in their hour of need. Among them are 129 learners yet to report back to school.
